Bagasse
Bagasse, the residue of sugarcane or energycane crushing, is an abundant source of biomass.

ENERGYCANE

As a warm-climate complement to our miscanthus product development pipeline, Ceres is developing sugarcane varieties that have been selected for their biomass yields rather than sugar production. These are known as energycane.

Product Pipeline

We are applying marker-assisted breeding and biotechnology to energycane, focusing our development activities primarily on biomass yield and stress tolerance traits needed to expand the growing region for energycane production.

We are also studying biomass composition traits that can enhance conversion process yields and decrease process costs.

  • Energycane is a perennial; stands lasts several years
  • Traditional breeding and selection of cane is complex and slow since viable seeds are seldom produced

  • Canes are reproduced through cuttings; not through seed
  • Energycane will likely be grown in tropical or subtropical regions
