Bagasse, the residue of sugarcane or energycane crushing, is an abundant source of biomass.

As a warm-climate complement to our miscanthus product development pipeline, Ceres is evaluating the potential of sugarcane varieties that have been selected for their biomass yields rather than sugar production. These are known as energycane.

Product Pipeline

Like other energy crops, marker-assisted breeding and biotechnology will play an important role in bringing energycane to market. Biomass yield and stress tolerance traits will be needed to expand the growing region for energycane production. Biomass composition traits that enhance conversion process yields and decrease process costs will be key as well.
